NIE Number / Certificate
By law you are required to have an NIE number to do anything fiscal in Spain such as buying a property, a car or even to have a contract with the electricity supplier. You need to go to Policia Nacional and hand in the application. Alternatively your solicitor can apply on your behalf. Your solicitor will need your original passport or a notarized copy of your passport.

NOTE! You have to take this to the police station (policia nacional) or the embassy/ consulate. This is NOT an application you can do on line.

HOW TO FILL IN THE N.I.E. APPLICATION FORM
1 DATOS PERSONALES means PERSONAL DETAILS
1er Apellido: Surname
2º Apellido : Please write three chiffons instead (---)
Nombre : Christian Name (make sure to use same as in passport)
Fecha de Nacimiento: Date of birth (use two digits for day and month)
Lugar de nacimiento: Place of birth
Sexo : Gender “H” for Male and “M” Female. X cross the one applicable
Estado Civil: Status. S for single. C for married.
V. for widow and D for divorced
País de nacimiento: Country of Birth
País de nacionalidad: Current Nationality
Domicilio en España: Address in Spain (if you have one, otherwise leave blank)

Address where you are to be notified when NIE is ready (Spain only). Leave blank if you don't have a Spanish address and pick the certificate up in person
Sign again where it says Firma del interesado
